While on a family vacation in Italy, a 16-year-old girl called the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline. Far from home and away from her usual sources of comfort, she felt trapped with a father whose controlling behavior and constant belittling left her anxious and overwhelmed. She told the counselor that every day, he yelled at her and made cutting remarks that wore her down emotionally and left her feeling powerless.
“My dad has been yelling at me all day and making little comments to put me down,” she shared. “I feel so trapped here. I can’t get away from him like I usually can at home.” The emotional strain had become nonstop, and she didn’t know how to handle it.
The counselor met her with empathy and reassurance, creating a safe space for her to talk through her fear and anxiety. Together, they focused on practical coping strategies she could use discreetly during the trip, such as simple grounding exercises, controlled breathing, and ways to shift anxious thoughts without drawing attention. The counselor reminded her that her feelings were valid and that she was not alone.
As the conversation continued, the teen felt the weight begin to lift. “Talking through the situation with you makes me feel a lot better,” she shared, adding that the strategies they practiced, “really helped.” By the end of the call, she felt calmer and more hopeful, knowing she had tools she could rely on and someone safe to turn to.
She ended the conversation with a renewed sense of confidence and relief. “You gave me hope,” she said. Because of the Childhelp hotline, and the donors who make it possible, this young girl found support in a moment when she felt isolated, and the strength to navigate a difficult situation knowing she wasn’t facing it alone.
