When Eli* arrived at Childhelp in early 2022, the home he entered had already closed a meaningful chapter. The Resource Parents had welcomed four children through foster care, who were now joyfully adopted and settled into their forever families. They weren’t planning to open their hearts again.

Then came Eli.

Something in his story stopped them and they opened their hearts and home to him.

The transition wasn’t easy. Eli had to learn new routines, adjust to unfamiliar faces, and find his place in a home that was still settling from change. But the household met him with patience and care, weaving safety and kindness into his days. Slowly, Eli began to trust. He smiled more easily, laughed more often, and found rest that had long eluded him.

Months later, the call came. A family member had been identified, and Eli would be reunified.

The goodbye was bittersweet. The house grew quiet again and hearts got heavy.

Weeks passed. Then came another call. The placement hadn’t worked out. Would they take Eli back?

They didn’t hesitate.

Eli returned to a home that felt familiar and this time, the bond only deepened. Seasons changed, but the love remained steady. The Resource Parents had become more than caregivers; they were his advocates, his safe place, his constant.

As DCFS explored long-term options, including the possibility of placement with Eli’s maternal grandmother in El Salvador, one truth became clear: Eli had already found his family. Standing before the court, the Resource Parents shared not only their willingness, but their deep desire to adopt him.

Eli’s biological mother saw it too. She saw how her son had grown, how he thrived, and she knew he was where he belonged. With love and courage, she gave her blessing.
