Mateo’s* journey began with both hope and profound loss. He and his family left Guatemala seeking safety and a brighter future in Los Angeles. Just before their move, Mateo lost his mother — an unimaginable grief that would follow him into a new country. Once in Los Angeles, the dream of stability quickly unraveled. The family lost their housing, financial pressures mounted, and the weight of it all left young Mateo struggling. As a teenager navigating deep pain and uncertainty, he turned to unhealthy coping mechanisms. But at his lowest point, Mateo made a courageous decision: he reached out for help.
That single act changed the trajectory of his life. Through DCFS, Mateo was connected to Childhelp and placed with a caring, newly approved Resource Parent. For the first time in a long while, he wasn’t just given a roof over his head. He was given something far more powerful: belief, respect, and genuine family. From day one, Mateo was treated with consistency, kindness, and encouragement. In that safe and supportive environment, healing began to take root. He returned to school with renewed determination, rebuilt his confidence, and worked tirelessly to catch up. Weeks after his classmates walked the stage, Mateo proudly earned his high school diploma; a hard-won victory that symbolized his resilience.
Today, Mateo continues to move forward with quiet strength. He is dedicated to learning English, building a better future, and starting each day with purpose. Before the sun rises, you can find him at the gym, putting in the work, supported every step of the way by a Resource Parent who truly believes in him. Mateo’s story is one of courage: the courage to ask for help, the courage to rebuild after loss, and the courage to keep showing up for himself. He is proof that even after the deepest heartbreak, with the right support, a new chapter filled with hope and possibility can begin.
