Ben* is a teenager who has lived with his maternal grandmother since early childhood due to his birth mother’s ongoing mental health and substance use challenges. He considers his grandmother his “mom” and identifies her as his primary source of safety and support. Over the years, Ben struggled with bullying, social anxiety, and low self-esteem, challenges that became more pronounced after transitioning to homeschooling. Previous therapy had not fully addressed the impact of long-term emotional and physical abuse.
Through Childhelp’s Relative Care program, Ben engaged in therapy that centered on his interests, including anime, video games, and superhero stories. Using these narratives in a trauma-informed way helped him build confidence and better understand his own experiences. He developed insight into how his past affected him while recognizing the strength of the relationship he shares with his grandmother.
As therapy progressed, Ben reported meaningful changes in his self-confidence and communication skills. He formed a new peer connection through Relative Caregiver Support groups and has been able to maintain that relationship using skills learned in therapy.
Today, Ben feels more prepared to move forward, equipped with tools to navigate relationships, manage challenges, and continue building a healthy sense of self.
